bullet Is the Web becoming Lifeless and making us Dumber?
Monday August 30th 2010, 12:07 pm

The internet Guru Clay Shirky appeared on the CNN Fareed Zakaria GPS show last night where they had a discussion on the internet web and if it was dead. Especially as we are at the height of a shared services software outsourcing approach encouraging more integrated software development services and with America having a firm position with India.

The show discussed various ideas such as the concept of whether we are becoming dumber because of the web i.e. we search for a lot of things having broader searches but are not drilling down anymore. Therefore our knowledge of depth is limited.

Clay Shirky discussed how when looking at paper magazines you are more likely to come across additional stories and information when looking for an article and when on the web this is not done. Shirky said, “The idea that I was looking through a magazine and I came across a story that, you know, I would never have thought I would have cared about the price of corn in Iowa, but now I read this article and it makes it – you know, it makes it interesting, puts it in this long context.“

“Those are the kind of things that it’s easy to come across in print, it’s harder to come across on the web, hardest of all to come across on the phone. And, in many ways, the challenge, particularly for people who care about an informed public for – for disseminating news, the challenge is to design back in the serendipity we used to get for free,“ Clay continues saying.

Other areas discussed were how amazing it is where much information is digitized allowing it to be easily searchable this can help in many ways in research and investigation for projects.

A key to this could all be related to ensuring we adapt a swift Lean Management Consulting approach and when integrating applications and ideas we do this in a sensible way increasing innovation and creativity.
